Lets start this months CARHUNTER with a mystery, maybe someone will have some new information?
This has been baffling folks for a few years and I do some
research and try to figure it out now and then, long story short- a bunch of
negatives were found in a dumpster and this photo was in them, photographer
long dead. It is a very early very cool custom model A – some folks ID’d some
of the body parts. Photo was dated 1938 and they say at Southern Speedway- once
I found a track that had that steel bridge behind it, track is long gone. The
assumption was southern Los Angeles – now I recently found out that Ran’s Auto
Works was on S. Western Ave and is STILL a body shop, that Chevy vehicle behind
it says E. Slauson (assume Ave) and the S. Western shop was .5 miles from
Slauson Ave. where a Chevy dealer was at one point. I love this car and if
anything I think I should build a model of it! This may be an unsolved mystery!
Technically no Southern Speedway, but there were several
with the name Ascot and I found Ascot #3 was called Southern Ascot Speedway in
South Gate California from 1937 closed during WWII 1942-43 – best I can tell
from reference of old programs this was the location of that track (Now a High School sports field) and notice
the South Gate Train Bridge which is visible in the car photo at that
track in 1938. The guys shop was 15 minutes from the track and E. Slauson ave
was 4 miles away from it
Maybe someone will have more info or know the fate of the car?
Now on to the 2023 Fall Pigeon Forge Rod Run PART ONE once again more confusion than a one armed paper hanger!
In the fall The Shades of the Past happens the week before the Rod Run, but mnay just said Shades was out on Parkway, it was in Dollywood with some 2500 cars!
Shades of the Past last show was 2022, this coverage starts the same week of when Shades usually was held with many lining Parkway declaring Shades is still happening!
The new show that kind of replaced Shades of the Past happened at the end of week one as it always did a week before the Rod Run out at Nashville Superspeedway
You are looking at coverage from the week before the actual Pigeon Forge Rod Run and seemlessly lands on the actual week!
Early arrivals and you will note in spite of folks saying it was packed, plenty of empty spots!
These old Jeep Grand Wagoneer's have been popping up, I worked for Jeep back in those days
Many 2 wheel drive Blazers/Tahoes were here this time
Don't see many Glassic's fiberglass replicas
It is just a golf cart with some WOOD, better photos will be seen in my coverage
A 38 Plymouth pleases the CARHUNTER
This Plymouth was at the spring run without a new paint job
Does that say Racin Tars? LOL
over the next 2 weeks I saw 7 of these Indy Hauler OBS trucks, I think the decals have been reproduced
Yes a flathead V8 Ford power plant
These Vdubs go for big bucks!
YES
Worst patina attempt ever?
It WAS a Honda once!
A 383 Barracuda, not Cuda, I should have examined more because it is rare for a base model with no hood scoops etc..
OK a 37 Plymouth works too!
More CARHUNTER bait with a 38 Plymouth coupe
CARHUNTER will accept another 37 Plymouth LOL
Now that is a Power Wagon
Now let me explain someone decided to declare they created a new show to replace Shades of the Past off Parkway behind a strip mall, A for effort, but took about 7 mins to walk it and as you see plenty O' empty spots. A large percentage of Rod Run goers literally fight any organized show thinking the free for all out on Parkway is the show!
Some folks came just for the week before and left before the rod run as this guy had done!
That is a bunch of real estate!
And with the one below CARHUNTER has left the show field of Smoky Mountain Dreams, it was $75 per car by the way!
Back to not the Rod Run coverage, lol!
Roys Toys
Yes that is a small block Chevy V8 head on a 4 cylinder
Roy has been at every Rod Run since I first attended back in 2011
67 Chargers kind of slip out of the collectors eye and those with vinyl tops very rare
How can anyone not love a Jalopy?
This AC Cobra club always meets during the Shades pre Rod Run weekend
Yeah CARHUNTER gets a 39 Plymouth to see
Hard for CARHUNTER to resist a 49 Plymouth coupe and it was a nice one
Rare to see Celica Convertible
Nice to see one the Neo Classic Nightmares!
This is the second time Mustang II Cobras were all over the place!
I think we are still not into the actual Rod Run week!
Pre Rod Run week still and they said online packed- NOT!
1967 Nosed Blazer, the vehicle did not emerge until 1969
I want this one!
Got a kick out of 3 folks walking around this Packard 2nd time I ran into it saying Pontiac? I told them Packard and there were crickets, not a clue!
I was guessing a Mazda Miata, but never found it again as it sped past me in the parking lots like it was targeting pedestrians like a video game
This photo starts the actual Rod Run week coverage as CARHUNTER enters the show in the Leconte Center
Another nose swapped Blazer
Kind of a Black Widow Sedan Delivery
It's a Pacer fish tank
All built for 24 Hours of Lemons race by Speedycop who just moved to Tennessee just outside of Maryville!
Another 38 Plymouth
This won the Ridler award at the Detroit Autorama, what do you think of it?
This view looks like chrome plated plumbing of a large industrial facility!
The Ridler award
Red Carpet of the dirty dozen, makes it hard to photograph with the lighting in here
Did you spot the Chvey roof on this 54 Plymouth?
Wishing Christy Lee well having some health issues as I type this
I will take this camper!
Classy well built truck!
Another Neo Classical nightmare
It is a new Bronco but looks great with this retro 2 tone!
